DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Republican Mitt Romney holds a commanding lead over President Barack Obama in the presidential race in Texas, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.

The survey indicates that 55 percent of likely voters support Romney over President Obama, who is supported by 39 percent of likely voters. The remaining 6 percent support another candidate.

The data is in line with the results of the 2008 election, when Republican John McCain received 55.4 percent of Texas votes to President Obama’s 43.6 percent.

The trends are similar in the poll’s results for the U.S. Senate race in Texas, where Republican Ted Cruz holds a 54-39 edge over Democrat Paul Sadler.

Republican candidates have carried Texas in the last eight presidential elections. The last victory by a democratic candidate came in 1976, when Jimmy Carter took Texas on his way to defeating the incumbent President Gerald Ford.
